Self Reflection

A

s a group, we felt that this project introduced us to a new dimension of learning that we never encountered before as students. Initially we speculated that the whole process of fabricating an interview and creating a blog would be tedious and dull. However, the project as a whole turned out to be quite thrilling. We started out with making a group that was unexpectedly exciting. Meeting new people in search for suitable teammates truly opened our eyes to the cultural and social diversity of our LAC 1201 class.

Again, we expected that the process of devising a script and video production would be very tiresome and uneventful. We had a lot of fun in cooking up all the creative and extraordinary ideas at every single night. We spent so much time in each of our meetings in arguing about whose crazy scenarios would be implemented for the project. It took a full week to finish the script, dissent and new ideas being the greatest culprits in slowing the process down. Nevertheless, everyone finally settled for an arbitrary script, and we immediately began the video production. Amusingly enough, the footing of our video took only a couple of hours, and a few days of editing, compared to the grueling 7 days of script-making.

Finally, yes, this project has improved our Chinese. We really appreciate taking this module and doing its project. It brings us to a new level of social ability, here, in Singapore.

IT'S ALL ABOUT PÉNG CHÉNG!!

BIOGRAPHY

       Zhào Péng Chéng was born on November 4th, 1989 in Dandong, Lioning Province, People’s Repulic of China. He moved to Singapore in late 2004 to continue his studies, starting from high school. Péng Chéng took his A-levels in Catholic High School (2005-2007) and then attended Victoria Junior College (2007-2010). In NUS, he studies Accountancy under the Business faculty. Péng Chéng indulges in several aesthetics, but he enjoyed music most of all. Of sports, his favorites are swimming and basketball, gratifying himself to either activity at least once a week.
            Credits should go to Adrianus Steffan as our project group ‘scout’ in recruiting Péng Chéng to our cause. In fact, Steffan and Péng Chéng attended the same Accountancy class (and were even friends), so it was not unexpected that Steffan would drag him into this project of ours.

A Note about the Script

We have included pinyin and character subtitles in our video. We have one pseudo-error to disclose: when referencing the measure word for animals, 只 (zhī), we accidentally inserted the traditional character, 隻. This is small mistake that doesn't change the meaning, just the continuity.

Also a list of the new words and character lies below:

guǎnjiā = 管家 (butler)

gēn = 跟 (to follow)

kuàijì = 会计 (accounting)

bēi = 杯 (measure word for glasses)

zhī = 隻 (measure word for animals) (traditional character)

只 (simplified character)

dànshì = 但是 (but)

jiàoshī = 教师 (teacher)

zǒu = 走 (to leave)

ba = 吧 (it)

OUR STORY!! 我们 的 故事!!

In short, the video was about the interrogation of Peng Cheng, the boyfriend, by his girlfriend's father, older brother, and younger brother.

So, first of all, in one bright morning, dad was sitting in the kitchen, enjoying the warm morning sun. Then Suzan (the girlfriend) comes along and dropped the boyfriend bombshell on him, ruining his morning. After some quick thinking, dad decided to get to know this boyfriend in a more 'personal' way, Chinese style, of course.

So Peng Cheng, being the good boyfriend he is, decided to oblige his girlfriend's invitation, and visited her house. Nervous and jumpy, Peng Cheng took a deep breath and knocked on the front door...

What will happen next???
Will he 'survive' the interview???

Find out the answers to these questions for yourselves, only in our video.
